Perhaps you are looking at adding- a-level to your home, expanding your kitchen, adding a great room, installing a home entertainment system, updating your bathroom.
2. Create a wish list of what you are looking to accomplish.
Have a place for the kids to hang out - built a great room & entertainment center
Be able to entertain guests while I cook in my kitchen - finally built that modern up to date kitchen by expanding out the back of the house
Have a mini vacation spot in my back yard - build a deck off that new kitchen and landscape the backyard.
3. Add to this a simple checklist of ideas for improvement.
4. Think about a realistic budget for the things you want to accomplish.
[Things always cost more than you think]
5. Once you have an idea of where you’re going, check out sources for ideas on how you might want to accomplish these ideas.
Find websites with home remodeling ideas, get a book with home improvement plans and review existing house plans to find something that matches your design considerations. See publications for current architectural styles and trends, go to a tradeshow exhibition or visit stores to see layouts appliances and more.
6. Get your ideas on paper.
After you have collected your ideas and reviewed existing house plans, it's time to sketch your plan. You might use the elements of an existing plan and have an architect tweak it to meet your specifications or enlist a professional to start from scratch.
